Overton High School is widely known for its Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Optional Programs's success in helping students develop their talents to their fullest potential. The success was recently recognized on a national level when Overton was identified as a 2015 GRAMMY's Signature School Semi-Finalist in recognition of its outstanding commitment to music education during the academic school year. This is a distinction awarderd to top US Public High Schools. Students in the CAPA Academy, those enrolled in the Optional Program, can work toward their creative and academic goals in a small learning community within the high school.

Students applying for the Overton High School Creative and Performing Arts Program must complete an Application for Optional Schools, which can be obtained from Overton HIgh School or the Department of Optional Schools and Advanced Academics 160 S. Hollywood, Room C106. Students must also submit a copy of the most recent comprehensive report card. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • 2.0 overall grade point average for each semester
  • No grade lower than a D as a semester or final grade
  • Students entering grades 9-12 must score at or above the 50th percentile on the Reading/Language Arts AND on the Mathematics subtests of the TCAP Achievement Test of Nationally normed test.

 In addition to the academic , conduct and attendance requirements, applicants must successfully complete an audition, agree to stay an extra hour after school each day in a specialized CAPA class, and agree to meet all the requirements of the student's major department.

Transportation is the responsibility of the student's parents/legal guardians.

Final approval is contingent upon the review of the student's final report card.
